(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has issued a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) advisory for the following areas after an SSO was confirmed nearby on Monday, August 27:
The incident occurred between 8 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. The follow-up investigation determined that the SSO was caused by a lift station malfunction that was corrected on-site. CBU crews followed departmental protocol to clean up the overflow immediately after the incident. It is estimated the volume of flow generated from this SSO was one thousand gallons.
Individuals in the aforementioned areas are advised to take precautions in the event of coming into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Any individual who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash hands and clothing thoroughly.
CBU is committed to increasing the efficiency and reliability of its wastewater collection and treatment system. Reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort. At the same time, CBU's commitment to transparency ensures that the public be advised in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
