(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton invites residents and visitors to the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market this Saturday, August 4, as he hosts “Mayor at the Market” from 9 a.m.-10 a.m.
Mayor Hamilton will greet visitors in front of City Hall (401 N. Morton St.) and be on hand to discuss current issues and initiatives in the City of Bloomington.
Immediately following "Mayor at the Market" will be a short program on the steps of City Hall honoring August 4 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Day in Bloomington. A representative of the Indiana Chapter of the ALS Association will give opening remarks, followed by words from IU Women's Basketball Coach Teri Moren, Mike Sonneborn from Commercial Service, and Mayor Hamilton. Finally, the mayor will participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness of the disease.
ALS, known by many as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, making even the simplest movements - walking, speaking, gesturing - incredibly difficult. There is no known cause or cure for this disease.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge began in the summer of 2014 and became the world's largest global social media phenomenon. The challenge encourages nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then nominating others to do the same. It is now an annual event to raise awareness and funds to find treatments and a cure for ALS.
The weekly "Mayor at the Market" series gives community members the opportunity to get acquainted with their mayor and other members of their city government, as well as to share ideas and concerns about the city in an informal setting.
