Bloomington Man Arrested After Bragging About Dousing Delivery Driver With Lighter Fluid

Last updated on Thursday, August 23, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested Tuesday after police say they connected him with an attempted robbery after he bragged he had doused a pizza delivery driver with lighter fluid and threatened to light him on fire.

According to Bloomington Police, on August 1, around 11:20 p.m., officers were alerted that a Mr. Delivery driver was waiting for another driver in the Circle K parking lot on West Kirkwood Avenue when a masked man approached him.

The man squirted lighter fluid on the driver and demanded all his money or "I'll light you on fire."

The driver told police he grabbed a spotlight from his car and shined it in the man's face causing him to flee.

Police then received information that 41-year-old Gary Staggs had been bragging about the incident.

Police found Staggs in the Monroe County jail on charges of stealing a bicycle and circular saw from a barn in late July. During an interview police say Staggs admitted to threatening the delivery driver. Staggs says he wasn't acting like himself at the time because he was high on Xanax.

Staggs is now facing additional charges of robbery and battery.
