(HARRISON & WASHINGTON CO.) - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance personnel have been scheduled to chip and fog seal U.S. Highway 150 from Palmyra in Harrison County to near Hardinsburg in Washington County.
The U.S. 150 chip seal between State Road 135 and S.R. 66 is slated for Wednesday and Thursday, August 1 and 2, weather permitting. The fog seal on this 8.5-mile-long section of U.S. 150 should occur on Monday, August 13.
These preventative maintenance applications are designed to seal U.S. 150's pavement from moisture intrusion and harmful ultraviolet ray degradation while reestablishing an acceptable coefficient of friction.
Chip seal applications coat the highway with liquid asphalt before topping it with small aggregate chips. Fog seals lock in the chips while further overcoating the roadway.
INDOT officials advise motorists to drive slowly and with extreme caution on highways that have been freshly chip or fog sealed to avoid vehicular damage from asphalt spray or loose aggregate. During surface treatment applications, flaggers will direct motorists around crews and equipment.
These chip and fog seals are extremely cost-effective. Experience shows that every $1 spent saves $6 to $14 in taxpayer expenditures "down the road".
