Seats Now Available To Hear Ken Bowersox Speak At Scholarship Celebration

(BEDFORD) - Seating is now available for open registration for the BNL Scholarship Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Celebration where astronaut Ken Bowersox will be the keynote speaker.

Although born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Bowersox considers Bedford to be "home" as he is a BHS graduate from the class of 1974.

Anyone can attend as long as they are registered by emailing their name(s). to bnlsf@nlcs.k12.in.us as soon as possible. Mary Nell Boyer with the BNL Scholarship Foundation urges anyone that wants to attend MUST email your name. Individuals that do not email their names will not be allowed to enter this complimentary evening.

The BNL Scholarship Foundation's 50th Anniversary Celebration will honor the past 50 years of supporting graduating BNL Seniors on their academic pursuits.

The not-for-profit (501c3), tax exempt, charitable foundation generates scholarships and supports the educational activities of graduating BNL Seniors heading to college. Just this year the BNL Scholarship Foundation awarded more than $567,000 in scholarships to 163 Bedford North Lawrence Class of 2018.

The event will be Saturday, July 14th starting with hors d'oeuvres at 5 p.m., then at 6:30 p.m. dinner will be served in the cafeteria. The appreciation program will finish the event at 7:30 p.m.

Bowersox is a retired US Navel Aviator with over 19 years of experience at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He has flown five times on NASA's Space Shuttle, serving as pilot, commander and mission specialist, and once on a Russian Soyuz, where he served as the flight engineer during decent.

Throughout his amazing career, he has logged over 211 days in space, including five and a half months on board the International Space Station (ISS).

Subsequent to his work aboard the ISS, Bowersox served as the director of the Johnson Space Center's Flight Crew Operations Directorate and retired from NASA and the US Navy in December, 2006.

Although retired, he remained involved with the US space exploration program as a member of the standing review boards for ISS, Space Shuttle and the Constellation Program.

From 2009-2011, Bowersox was the Vice President of Astronaut Safety and Mission Assurance at SpaceX.

Now, he is an independent consultant advising clients on the management and technical aspects of aerospace projects. He is also a member of the NASA Advisory Council and Chairman of the council's Human Exploration and Operations Committee.
