Police And Fire Officials Will Have Ability To Turn Stop Lights Green

Last updated on Monday, July 30, 2018

(WASHINGTON) - Through cooperation with the State Department of Transportation, police and fire vehicles will be able to pre-empt stoplights when responding to an emergency call in the City of Washington.

Mayor Joe Wellman told the Washington Time Herald that the project has been under discussion with INDOT for some time and originally INDOT was to pay 90 percent of the cost with the city picking up the tab for the remaining 10 percent.

Recently INDOT informed the mayor they will pay 100 percent of the cost. The city will contribute $2,900 for planning expenses.

Once construction is complete, police and fire would get the right of way and stop other traffic by using GPS and links to the lights.

Currently, the funding only includes money for Washington City Police and city fire vehicles.

Officials say there is a possibility that ambulances, sheriff's deputies, state police, conservation officers and even Washington Township Fire vehicles might also be able to use the system.

INDOT will also be putting in new digital stop lights on State Road 57. The project is expected to be complete by fall.
