Last updated on Thursday, July 12, 2018

(MITCHELL) - The Independent Mayor of Mitchell - in announcing his intentions seek reelection has joined the Republican Party.

Mayor JD England says that "serving and running as a Republican is consistent with my goals for our city and the issues I plan to continue to pursue."

England said he is "fully aligned" with the issues Lawrence County Republicans have championed in their last few campaigns, including infrastructure development, recreational facilities, downtown revitalization, quality of life improvements, safe housing in all neighborhoods, and fiscal responsibility.

"Our City issues are without party label" England said. "We have hometown challenges that affect us all. I will continue to roll up my shirt sleeves while working with like-minded people of all parties and affiliations."

England was first elected mayor in 2015, winning the General Election without organization support over former Mayor Danny Terrell.

"We are thrilled to have Mayor England join the growing Republican movement in Lawrence County," said Lawrence County Republican Chairman Chris May. "He is a committed public servant, and the Republicans welcome JD and everyone like him who is interested in making a positive difference in Lawrence County."

Mitchell Republican City Clerk Treasurer Mark Bryant said "We are all very pleased. We're happy to have the mayor on the team, and there's no question in our minds that we share a vision for the future of Mitchell and a commitment to a substantive and issue-oriented administration."
