Carroll Brothers Bring Christmas in July at Lawrence County 4-H Fair

Last updated on Friday, July 20, 2018

(LAWRENCE COUNTY) - Michael and Thomas Carroll embraced the colder months as both of their sewing projects in this year’s 4-H fair are pieces for winter.

Michael is a 10 year member of 4-H and he plans to head to Ivy Tech in the fall for general studies.

Thomas is two years younger than his brother and is an eight year member. Thomas is home schooled.

Michael made a 'Buddy the Elf' costume that he can wear himself and Thomas made a Men's winter coat that took the Grand Champion title.

"It was frustrating making it because we had to take out a few seams," Thomas said when describing the process to make his coat.

Thomas plans to wear his coat to formal occasions.

And although Michael didn't place for sewing, he did receive Reserve Grand Champion for his homemade spaghetti sauce and a blue ribbon for his homemade apple pie.

Also, Michael and Thomas both have rabbits along with other 4-H projects.

"I have a mom and six baby rabbits. If you have time, you should go over there, they're pretty cute," Michael said about his rabbits.

Michael mentioned how special it is to be a 10 year 4-H member because it's not something that everyone does.

From his 10 years, he said that he has learned responsibility, time management and leadership.

"I can use that later on in life," Michael said.

Thomas also said that he has learned more responsibility and leadership skills through 4-H.

This year, Micheal was the Treasurer for the Lawrence County Junior Leaders. And Thomas will be the upcoming Juniors Leaders President.

Thomas has also been president, and held other office positions, for a number of 4-H clubs during his time at the 4-H fair.

Out of all the things that Michael has participated in, his favorite is working the State Fair 4-H Exhibit Hall because he gets to meet new people and make friends from all over the state.

Thomas said that he made a steam punk outfit for robotics club and sewing club in 2017 and that was one of his favorite projects.
