UPDATED - Lawrence County First To Conduct Mobile Home Tax Sale

Last updated on Wednesday, July 25, 2018

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners voted to amend the county’s contract with SRI to conduct a tax sale to collect delinquent property taxes on mobile homes.

SRI Inc. is an Indianapolis-based company that conducts tax sales, commissioners' certificate sales, deed sales and sheriff sales for more than 150 counties in Indiana.

Lawrence County Treasurer Paula Stewart told the commissioners that Lawrence County will be the first in the state to conduct a mobile home tax sale. There are currently 168 properties totaling $17,000 in delinquent taxes.

If the taxes are not paid, Lawrence County will saler these mobile homes.

A tenatitive date of October 30th has been set for the tax sale.

Notices were sent to property owners in January and June informing them of the delinquent taxes.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent David Holmes says crews will resume paving next Tuesday.

"They have some odds and ends to complete and then they will be finished," Holmes added.

Crews continue to mow and cut brush and hope to have most of the brush cleared from intersections before school starts.

Holmes reported Bridge 67 in Lawrenceport is open and he is pleased with the work. He told the commissioners the project was completed $14,000 under the bid amount. He is waiting on bids on the other bridges needing repairs in the county.

Holmes reported the ton limit on Williams Silverville Road has been raised from 3 tons to 5 tons.

Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham reported there were 166 inmates in the jail Tuesday morning. Of those 32 were females, 12 level 6 offenders with 2 Department of Correction holds.

"That is the lowest it has been in 10 months," he added.

The jail can house 180 inmates.

"But we need to stay around 144 or 80 percent capacity to be operational," Sheriff Branham said.

The daily average in July was 185. The contributing factor to that number is the length of stay - the days inmates are staying in jail.

"We booked in fewer people, but those in the jail are staying for longer periods of time," he added. "We went from holding an inmate 24 to 26 days, to holding them 34.5 days or more. I think everyone is doing what they can, we are just overwhelmed."

Sheriff Branham reported the final jail inspection was complete and there were a few issued officials will have to address in the near future. Those issues are manpower, overcrowding and lighting in the day room.

Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Valorie Luchauer says she will be holding a tabletop meeting with county healthcare professionals to work on their emergency management plans.

---

The commissioners opened two paving bids. Those bids were taken under advisement.

The commissioners passed an investment ordinance requested by Treasurer Paula Stewart. The ordinance was required by state law.

---

The commissioners voted to extend the lease contract with the Department of Child Services which will expire in August until February 19th.

---

The commissioners resigned a contract with Maximus to do the cost analysis for child support. Maximus will do the work for $45.

---

The commissioners amended the parking permit ordinance at Courthouse plaza to allow those cited to have 30 days to pay the fine to avoid court costs.
