Company To Pay $10K Fine In Worker's Death At IU's Campus

Last updated on Friday, July 27, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - A contractor has agreed to pay $10,000 in fines for workplace safety violations found after a worker died at an Indiana University construction site.

Rock Solid Masonry LLC was cited four serious violations after the April death of 35-year-old William M. Brown Jr. The Bloomington man died when a 1,600-pound limestone slab fell and killed him as it was being lifted above an interior doorway at IU's Swain Hall.

The violations included improper use of a winch and failing to instruct employees in its proper use.

The company agreed to pay fines totaling about $1,000 less than those proposed the state's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Indiana Department of Labor spokeswoman Stephanie McFarland says the company has addressed all noncompliance issues and agreed to additional safety training for its workers.
