City Officials Approves Lowering Speed Limit on Mitchell Road

Last updated on Thursday, July 12, 2018

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford City Council voted to lower the speed limit on Mitchell Road.

Bedford Police Department Chief Terry Moore made the request to lower the speed limit along the south end of Mitchell Road from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. The request came after officials at the Lawrence County Solid Waste Department expressing concern about the speed limit. The recycling center sees an average of 170 customers a day. Chief Moore was also concerned because of increased traffic entering and leaving the Dollar General Store.

Currently there are signs warning motorist to reduce their speed as they enter the city limits. The signs will be changed from 50 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour before motorist reach the new 35 mile per hour zone.

Once new speed limit signs are posted, motorists will have 30 days to adjust before law enforcement officers will begin issuing tickets.

The council also approved an ordinance making the alley behind Stonecutters Place senior apartments on 16th Street one-way going east to west between J and K streets.

Chief Moore made the request because many residents use canes and wheelchairs and must cross the alley from the rear entrance of the building to the parking lot.
