Boys and Girls Club Receives Grants for Programming and Safety

(BEDFORD) - The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County received two grants this week for their programs and safety efforts.

Chief Professional Officer, Brigitte Gurden, and Resource Development & Marketing Director,Timber Browning accepted a grant from Riley Children's Foundation. The check in the amount of $3,000 was presented by Riley Children's Foundation board member, Ron Remak of Bill C. Associates.

The $3,000 will be used for garden club, chef's hat and triple play.

Garden Club has been offered at the club for two years. The club works with volunteers and staff to create an educational program about growing plants and how to make food from the plants according to Browning.

Chef's Hat is a popular program within the club that teaches kids to cook while Triple Play "demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle" according to the Boys and Girls Club website.

The club also received a grant from the Lawrence County Community Foundation in the amount of $2,500 to be used to purchase an App called Rave Mobile Safety App.

Browning said once the purchase is made, all the staff at the Boys and Girls Club will have the app on their phone allowing them to increase response times of authorities, the fire department, ambulance crews and more.

The police and all other safety personnel will have the information of Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County buildings.

"[Authorities] will be able to use this to better serve our children. Safety is the goal!" said Browning.

Currently there are 140 kids enrolled in summer programming at the club.

During school months, the club serves around 460-500 kids a night with all sites included.
