WTIU To Host First Annual Conference On Aging On July 28

Last updated on Sunday, June 10, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - WTIU Public Television is dedicating an entire day to exploring, explaining, and navigating some of the issues of growing older.

The first-ever WTIU Conference on Aging will be held July 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Radio-TV Building on the Indiana University campus. WTIU is pulling together area experts and resources to help participants determine what to ask, who to ask, how to ask, and when to ask some very important - and sometimes difficult - questions about aging.

Brent Molnar, WTIU Station Operations and Content Director, decided to organize the conference around the key questions people should be asking after having conversations with service providers and community organizations involved with aging issues.

"When we started talking to experts in healthcare, Social Security, Medicare, long term care facilities, and retirement planning, they all mentioned that one of the biggest challenges individuals face is not knowing which questions to ask when they seek help from services. Their second concern is that people may be making uninformed choices now which could limit their options later," said Molnar.

In addition to asking the right questions about aging, Molnar also hopes that the conference will give attendees access to the resources they need.

"Our goal is to create an event that not only provides trusted answers to some of aging's greatest and most common challenges, but will also point people toward reliable resources in our area where they can get advice for their specific situation," said Molnar.

The conference will include sessions on Aches & Pains; Retirement Boot Camp: Navigating Social Security and Medicare; Dementia Overview; Choosing a Care Facility; Planning Ahead for Success: Estate Management; Hospice: End of Life Decisions; and Giving up the Keys.

The event is open to both caregivers and those who would like some advice on more informed aging. Registration is available online at wtiu.org/events or by calling 800-933-9330. The cost is $25 for one admission or $40 for two admissions, and lunch will be provided. Vendor tables can also be reserved through the conference registration website or phone number for $30 (does not include lunch or event admission).
