(MONROE CO.) - Jake the horse has improved and has regained his healthy appetite after being seized from a Monroe County farm.

Jake has been examined by the state veterinarian, as part of the criminal investigation.

He continues to improve, and has a healthy appetite. He thrives on human interaction, and seems to be in a good emotional disposition, Monroe County Police say.

Once necessary reports from outside agencies and subpoena requests are received, a complete case will be forwarded to the Office of the Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney.

Monroe County Sheriff's Department Animal Management deputies responded to a tip last week that horses had died from maltreatment at a Monroe County property.

Deputies found two horse carcasses closed within two separate stalls. A third horse, Jake, was found alive in another stall.

Blood work found its poor condition was caused by starvation. A stool sample showed the horse only ate dirt and wood.

Deputies removed Jake and arranged for his care.

The owner is a man who has experience in horse training, officials said. The sheriff's office is considering charges such as animal neglect and improper disposal of large carcasses. No charges have been filed yet.

The case remains under investigation.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department Animal Management Division has duties which extend well beyond addressing issues of cats and dogs. These deputies receive training and have the authority to investigate all manner of animal neglect and cruelty.
