(GREENE CO.) - Roger Axe, Director of Greene County Emergency Management is asking Greene County Churches to open their doors Friday and Saturday to help those with no air conditioning to stay cool with the upcoming heat wave.
"The Heat Index will be in the dangerous levels Friday and Saturday. There are many especially the elderly and the young who are at high risk. That is why we are asking the churches of Greene County, where possible, to open cooling shelters those days." says Roger Axe, Director of Greene County Emergency Management Agency.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook warning for the surrounding area including Greene, Lawrence, Monroe and Orange counties.
The National Weather Service says it will be partly sunny and hot on Friday with a high near 92. On Saturday there is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. but the day will be mostly sunny and hot. Heat index values peaking between 100 and 110 degrees are expected during the afternoon and early evening Friday through Sunday.
Thunderstorms are possible this weekend and into early next week. Storms will be capable of gusty winds, torrential rainfall and dangerous lightning. On Saturday, the main threats will be localized heavy rainfall leading to flooding, small hail, and cloud to ground lightning strikes. A damaging wind threat would accompany any afternoon storms if they develop.
The Weather Service is warning residents to be cautious if planning to be outdoors for extended periods of time
"We are also asking the churches that open the cooling shelters to notify television and radio stations, newspapers, as well as social media," Axe says. "Many of those at risk only get their news by social media."
We don't want anybody to die from the heat when we have cool churches as a resource. That is one way the churches can look out and serve our fellow man." Axe added.
