(SEYMOUR) - The father of an 8-year-old Crothersville boy who died on Thursday was arrested after he never sought medical treatment for the boy and tried to prevent others from calling 911 to help his son.
Jackson County Police arrested 41-year-old Curtis Gilbert Collman Jr., of Seymour on a felony charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
He also faces felony charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, pointing a firearm and possession of meth, failure to register as a sex or violent sex offender and theft. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail without bond.
Curtis Gilbert Collman III died at 2:43 p.m. on Thursday at Schneck Medical Center. He was buried Tuesday afternoon at Uniontown Cemetery.
According to a Jackson Circuit Court probable cause affidavit, little Curtis became ill early Thursday morning at his father's apartment at 10857 East County Road 400 North.
Collman Jr. contacted a woman at about 10 a.m. and told her his son was not acting right and he needed her help.
She told police when she arrived around 10:50 a.m. Thursday the boy needed immediate medical attention. When she went to call 911 Collman knocked the phone from her hand and said he was not going back to prison.
He then went into another room in the apartment, grabbed a handgun and pointed it at her telling her he would kill all three of them and then left the room.
The woman fled the home, without her phone, and didn't know what to do because she feared for her life.
Collman's landlord told police she saw Collman carry his son from the apartment and place him into an Oldsmobile Bravada after breaking a window because he couldn't open the door. He told her his son was having a seizure.
Collman then drove to his parents' home at 9731 East County Road 800 South in Crothersville, around 1 p.m. Police are still putting together where Collman went between the time he left the apartment and arrived at his parents' home.
His mother told her son they needed to call 911 to get the boy help. His mother told police her son didn't want to call 911 and then became hysterical, crying and acting crazy. He then fled the home after he learned someone had called 911.
Police received the 911 call at 1:47 p.m. and police and Jackson County Emergency Medical Service first responders arrived and transported the boy to Schneck Hospital.
Police later found Collman Jr. at 8795 South County Road 825 East around 7 p.m. Thursday and he was arrested on the charge of failure to register as a sex offender.
Police then obtained a search warrant for his apartment and found meth and drug paraphernalia.
During a police interview, Colman told police he didn't know what made his son sick and he should have listened to his mother but he panicked.
