(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Health Department reports an employee who handled food at Burger King has been diagnosed with hepatitis A.
"While it is relatively rare for restaurant patrons to become infected with hepatitis A virus due to an infected food handler, anyone who consumed food or drink at Burger King on (those dates), it is recommended to receive vaccinations by June 7, 2018, as further protection from becoming ill," stated the press release.
The health department said Burger King is cooperating to prevent any new cases as a result of this diagnosis. The press releases states the employee worked while ill May 15-19 and May 22-24.
Vaccinations are being administered at the health department, 2419 Mitchell Road, from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. today and Thursday.
Anyone who consumed food and/or drink during the dates listed above is asked to monitor their health for symptoms of hepatitis A infection for up to 50 days after exposure. Symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, fever, stomach pain, brown-colored urine and light-colored stools. Yellowing of the skin and eyes also may appear.
If any of these symptoms develop, stay at home and contact your doctor immediately.
It's important to wash your hands with soap and warm water frequently and thoroughly, especially after using the bathroom, to prevent the spread of hepatitis A.
