Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department, says the boy was playing with his family in the river when he got too far away and was swept up by the current. The search continues on the East Fork White River near downtown.

Conservation officers say family saw him being swept away, tried to save him and realized it was too dangerous.

A search using a helicopter and sonar is currently underway.

Mill Race Park has been closed. Authorities and park staff ask that you avoid the area so they can continue the search.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
