Jackson County Police Officer J.L. McElfresh arrested 31-year-old Nathan Michael Shepherd, around 10:30 p.m. Monday in the 4700 block of West State Road 58. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail without bond on charges of burglary, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing, intimidation and possession of marijuana.

Shepherd was arrested without incident within a mile of the Freetown garage he and another man broke into hours earlier.

Officers received several tips and were patrolling the area when McElfresh spotted Shepherd alongside State Road 58 while responding to another call not related to the incident. Shepherd told police he had hid in a culvert about 100 feet from where he was found.

Police responded to 3700 block of State Road 58 West at 8:13 a.m. after a report of two men seen attempting to break into a garage.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers says officers located one of the suspects, 32-year-old Jerry Kinworthy of Columbus, hiding in the garage.

Shepherd fled from the garage into a wooded area and threatened to shoot at police as he ran.

Officers heard loud noises coming from the garage, but could not confirm whether it was gunshots.

"It might have just been items falling in the garage, Sheriff Carothers added. "There was no evidence to confirm whether either of the men were armed."

But officers treated the scene as if the men were armed. They requested armored vehicles from the Seymour Police Department and Indiana State Police to respond to the scene. Brownstown Police also responded to the scene.

Police were able to talk Kinworthy into surrendering four and a half hours later.

Kinworthy was arrested on charges of intimidation, burglary, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail without bond.

Shepherd was last seen around 8:30 a.m. Monday wearing a camouflage shirt and pants. He is about 6 feet tall, thin build, with has dark hair and a dark-colored, thin beard.

Officers detained a man thought to be Shepherd just before 2 p.m. in the 11000 block of State Road 135 near the Jackson-Brown county line 4 miles away from the incident, but he turned out not to be Shepherd and was released.
