City Of Bloomington Street Department Begins Work On 2018 Paving Projects

Last updated on Tuesday, June 5, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Routine road paving and asphalt maintenance projects have kicked off the summer paving season. The City of Bloomington Street Department will work to complete 19 asphalt paving projects through October 2018, improving approximately 20 lane miles of City-maintained streets.

"Ongoing, routine maintenance of our existing infrastructure was identified by residents in our recent City Survey as a top priority. The paving and restriping we do this summer will improve our roads for years and continue important preventative maintenance that saves us money in the long run. We are responsible for 235 miles of roadway, so each year we work to improve about ten percent as part of our Pavement Management Plan," commented Mayor John Hamilton.

Information for all paving projects will be available again this year through an interactive online map at bloomington.in.gov/street on the City's website. The map displays each paving project using a specific color code for the anticipated month of completion, plus indicating which ones have been completed. The map will be updated on a monthly basis for users to easily view the current status of each paving project. A new feature for the map is an additional data layer that shows all paving projects that have been completed in the last ten years.

"The interactive map on the City website is a great tool that makes it easy for the public to see this year's paving schedule and track our progress. The ability to look back and see the paving projects that have been finished over the past decade is an interesting addition to the map that we're excited to offer," said Joe VanDeventer, Director of Street Operations.

The City budget allocated $561,000 for the purchase of asphalt in 2018. Over 13,000 tons of asphalt will be used to complete this year's paving projects. For the full 2018 paving schedule list and to view the interactive map, please visit bloomington.in.gov/street.
