City Of Bloomington Launches New Composting Pilot For City Hall

Last updated on Sunday, June 10, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington City Hall employees now have the opportunity to recover organic waste and track their impact through a new pilot spearheaded by the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, and implemented by Green Camino, Inc.

The six month commercial composting pilot includes weekly organic waste collection by Green Camino from City Hall's two employee kitchens, monthly reports tracking the amount of waste diverted from the landfill, and educational composting sessions for City Hall employees. The City will provide the public with a report of its findings at the end of the pilot period.

"The City Hall composting pilot demonstrates the administration's commitment to being a leader in diverting waste from the landfill as well as in highlighting the benefits of smart, sustainable investments to improve an organization's bottom line," said Mayor John Hamilton. "We look forward to leveraging this and other pilot projects to inform conversations about broader, community sustainable investment opportunities."

Along with weekly compost collection, the Green Camino pilot project will track and report organic waste recovery efforts by City Hall employees.

"Community sustainability is only possible through the efforts of many, and we're excited to have the opportunity to support City Hall's waste management initiatives," said Green Camino CEO and co-founder Kathy Gutowsky.
