Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton To Perform In Play And Host Farmers' Market Saturday

Last updated on Thursday, June 28, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton invites residents and visitors to the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market this Saturday, June 30, as he hosts “Mayor at the Market” from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mayor Hamilton will greet visitors in front of City Hall at 401 N. Morton St. and be on hand to discuss current issues and initiatives in the City of Bloomington.

In addition, Mayor Hamilton will be performing the role of "Green Crayon" in The Day the Crayons Quit. Based on the book by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, the play is being performed by a cast drawn from the Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males and "Read for 200" volunteers, under the direction of Isadore James Torry. Two performances of this family-friendly play will take place inside the City Hall Atrium at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

"Read for 200" is a partnership between the City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males, the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools, and United Way of Monroe County that is designed to promote literacy and celebrate the City and County Bicentennial in 2018. The initiative seeks to increase the visibility of men of color in schools and in association with literacy efforts. Men who volunteer read a collective minimum of 200 hours to children in schools, community centers, and other public spaces.

The weekly "Mayor at the Market" series gives community members the opportunity to get acquainted with their mayor and other members of their city government, as well as to share ideas and concerns about the city in an informal setting.
