(UNDATED) - Starting July 1, all school and intramural coaches will have to pass a “heat preparedness” course. Coaches will learn the signs of heat exhaustion and other illnesses.
The law, authored by State Representative Ron Bacon (R-Chandler), says interscholastic and intramural coaches must complete and be tested on a course on heat preparedness. Coaches will be required to complete the certification every two years
The new requirements will help coaches take a step back and decide when a player needs to sit out to cool off.
The heat preparedness course is already offered by the Indiana High School Athletics Association, and many coaches have already completed the training.
Rep. Bacon says young athletes can do their part by staying hydrated and making sure they recognize the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
