Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department Warns Of New Scam Using Deputy's Name

Last updated on Monday, June 11, 2018

(COLUMBUS) - The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office is warning that the names of department personnel are being used in a telephone scam.

On Friday, June 8th, a caller identified himself as Bartholomew County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Major Chris Lane telling the individual that he had missed his service on jury duty and therefore a summons would be issued unless he paid a fine.

This is a scam. No one from the sheriff's department would call asking for a monetary fee if you missed your jury duty service. Do not give personal information over the phone and do not send money.

Police believe scammers are getting deputies names online and are worried that this sounds so professional that many people may provide the information and the funds requested.

If residents receive this type of call, just hang up and call the Sheriff's Office at 812-379-1650 to verify if Major Lane or any other BCSO deputy actually made the telephone call.

This remains under investigation. If you receive one of these calls or if you have any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contact:
Detective Terry Holderness
