(BEDFORD) - Astronaut Ken Bowersox will be the keynote speaker at the BNL Scholarship Foundation's 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Although born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Bowersox considers Bedford to be "home" as he is a BNL graduate from the class of 1974.

The BNL Scholarship Foundation's 50th Anniversary Celebration is just that - a celebration and appreciation of 50 years of generous donors.

The not-for-profit (501c3), tax exempt, charitable foundation generates scholarships and supports the educational activities of graduating BNL Seniors heading to college. Just this year the BNL Scholarship Foundation awarded more than $567,000 in scholarships to 163 Bedford North Lawrence Class of 2018 for their academic pursuits.

The free event will be July 14th for sponsors, donors and special guests. The BNL Scholarship Foundation is celebrating the donors that have supported graduating Seniors for 50 years.

The 50th anniversary celebration banquet is presented by the generosity of 50 sponsors who have contributed financially or through service.

Subsequent to his work aboard the ISS, Bowersox served as the director of the Johnson Space Center's Flight Crew Operations Directorate and retired from NASA and the US Navy in December, 2006.

Although retired, he remained involved with the US space exploration program as a member of the standing review boards for ISS, Space Shuttle and the Constellation Program.

From 2009-2011, Bowersox was the Vice President of Astronaut Safety and Mission Assurance at SpaceX.

Now, he is an independent consultant advising clients on the management and technical aspects of aerospace projects. He is also a member of the NASA Advisory Council and Chairman of the council's Human Exploration and Operations Committee.
