12 BNL Athletes Tested Positive For Drugs During 2017-18 Season

Last updated on Sunday, June 17, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Drug testing of athletes at Bedford North Lawrence High School is done through two outside vendors who use a numerical system that randomly selects which athlete will be tested. Which means an athlete could be tested more than once.

The Times Mail reports that Athletic Director Jeff Callahan says 408 names were in the pool of students who could be randomly tested. The number of students was further narrowed to 20 in each testing session.

During the 2017-18 school year 15 days were set aside for drug testing, but three of those sessions were canceled due to various reasons.

Testing during the past year resulted in 12 positive tests results.

If a student tests positive the school will provide information and outreach programs to the student. The goal is to help the student not make it widely know a student tested positive.

At the school board meeting Thursday, Callahan told board members he is exploring ways of reducing the instances of drug usage among athletes and working to enhance the assistance offered to students who do test positive for drugs.
