Samuel Arp II Beats Out Michelle Woodward For Prosecutor

(BEDFORD) - A Cinderella story came true for Samuel Arp II after he won the Republican nomination for Lawrence County prosecutor Tuesday night.

Arp II received 2,550 votes, or 51.9 percent of the vote beating Woodward who received 2,361 votes, or 48.1 percent.

Arp, a local attorney and former Indiana State Police trooper, said he is humbled that voters entrusted him with this great responsibility.

Arp, whose campaign centered on the drug problem in Lawrence County plans to take a strong stand against drug dealers.

Woodward has served Lawrence County for more than 12 years.

In other contested races:

Gary Scherschel received 426 votes beating out his two opponents for the Indian Creek Township trustee Republican nomination.

L.C. Kern received 69 votes and current Trustee Kyle Hall received 66.

Currently, Scherschel does not have a challenger from an opposing party.

Scott Smith received 42 percent of the votes in the race for the Republican nomination for Lawrence County Council District 1. Smith will face Democratic candidate Bethany Hildum Phillips in November.

Janie Craig Chenault will be the Republican candidate for Lawrence County Council District 3 in the general election on Nov. 6. Chenault received 663 votes beating out Ray Todd Stevens who received 242 votes and Frankie Willbanks with 256 votes. Chenault will face Democratic candidate Logan Jefferson in the fall.

Incumbent Bob Phillips won the Republican primary for Perry Township trustee, defeating Timothy Morrow Sr., 182 votes to 59.

In Mitchell, Barbara Hall won the Republican nomination for the position of Marion Township trustee defeating Lonnie Graves, 545 votes to 410. Currently, no Democrat has filed to run for the trustee seat.
