Orange County Historical Society Preparing World War I Exhibit

Last updated on Wednesday, May 30, 2018

(ORANGE CO.) - The Orange County Historical Society has been busy this year.

The museum, located on the Paoli Square, is open Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other times are available by appointment.

"We welcome our visitor friends to stop in and check out the recently refreshed and updated display areas," says Orange County Historical Society President Robert Henderson. "Guided tours are also available for any interested groups."

The historical society is working with Chris Lindley and Paoli High School Advanced U.S. History Class for its recent annual "A Night at the Museum" event sponsoring the "Best of Show" award. Congrats to Rachel Umpleby for her outstanding exhibit relating to World War I.

In a related matter and observance of this year's 100th Anniversary of the ending of World War I, the Society is planning to create a special temporary exhibit at the museum with Orange County's links to the event. The display will be held in conjunction with the local Veterans Day celebration this November.

Henderson says some items from the time period currently housed in the museum collection will be culled together for the exhibit, but says he is hoping Orange County residents will come forward with stories, photographs, artifacts that they might be willing share and have displayed for the observance.

Some more minor improvements and cleaning continues at the museum particularly in regards to the Research Room downstairs, which is still undergoing renovations. New exhibit labels have been added to several of the display areas.

A number of new and interesting items have been donated to the museum collection in recent months including a sizeable number of rare and historical items and materials related to the former Paoli, Inc. and its link and long history to the Orange County wood industry.

OCHS meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Paoli Library meeting room, unless otherwise announced. Members are always welcome and urged to attend. Membership in the OCHS is extended to any individual expressing an interest in historical preservation.

Lindley House

Several projects are in the works a the historic 1860s Lindley House including the installation of new period wall and window coverings for a number of rooms, replacing some of the downstairs light fixtures for more period like working pieces and rotating of the fragile quilt and bed coverings.

Long term projects and goals for the historic Lindley home site include the construction of a wooden barn like structure that would house an exhibit of early farm implements and tools allowing the site the to be better interpreted as a 1860s "working farm home."

Henderson says the growing need to have heat and air condition installed in the house is also something being investigated by the group to aid in preserving the homes period furnishings and artifacts in addition for allowing the farmhouse to be open more and accessible to visitors.

The Lindley home is available for tours by appointment only.
