Last updated on Tuesday, May 8, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University Police arrested a Bloomington man on Tuesday in connection to multiple bicycle thefts on campus.

Police arrested 38-year-old James Stewart near a bicycle at the Read Center just before 1 a.m.

Police say Steward was seen walking away from the area pushing a bicycle.

Capt. Craig Munroe says as officers approached Stewart he mounted the bike and attempted to elude officers. Stewart was arrested without incident a short distance away in the Jordan Avenue Parking Garage construction site.

Officers recovered one bicycle, multiple bicycle parts, four cut bicycle locks, bolt cutters, drugs and drug paraphernalia that were in Stewart's possession at the time of his arrest.

IUPD will continue to investigate Stewart's involvement in the 28 thefts of bicycles and bicycle parts since April 1 on campus.

Stewart was booked into Monroe County Jail on felony charges of possession of meth, unlawful possession of a syringe and misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, possession of marijuana and theft.
