Limestone Heritage Festival: Limestone Carving Exhibit and Contest

(BEDFORD) - The Limestone Carving Exhibit and Contest is back again at the Limestone Heritage Festival and will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 29th and continues Saturday, June 30th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be sculptures on displayed inside the Downtown Depot, with live carving demonstrations on the Depot's front lawn both days.

Those interested in submitting their work into the limestone carving contest should contact organizer Terry Kirkman at (812) 797-0867. There will be three categories for the competition; they are People's Choice, Best Overall Carving & Best Amateur Carving. Kirkman said there will be prize money awarded for the winners of each category.

"[Carving] is not as hard as everyone thinks it is... Its just the tools. Everyone says 'Well, I'm not an artist." I think everybody has a little bit of artistic something. You'd be surprised if you had a the right tools and someone to give you a few pointers- its not as hard as it looks," said Kirkman.

Best Overall Carving will win $700, People's Choice will win $250 and Best Amateur Carving will take home $150.

There will be a raffle for one beautiful limestone birdbath. Tickets can be purchased inside the Downtown Depot & also at the Lawrence County History Museum, located at 929 15th Street, for $1 or purchase 6 tickets for $5.
