Large Beams To Be Trucked In For Overpass Project In Huntingburg

Last updated on Sunday, May 13, 2018

(HUNTINGBURG) - This week six 100-plus feet long steel beams will be installed for the overpass being constructed over railroad tracks near 12th Street and Styline Drive in Huntingburg.

Crews will close 12th Street from Chestnut Street to Styline Drive beginning Monday. The roads will be closed to traffic for the entire week.

Huntingburg Street Superintendent Jason Stamm say three beams will be brought in one day and then set in place. Then the other three will be brought in and set. The work should be completed this week.

Oversized trucks carrying the beams will travel down I-64 from Kentucky, then take State Road 161, State Road 64, Styline Drive and 12th Street to get to the construction site.

The overpass will address what authorities say is one of the biggest traffic concerns for motorists driving through Huntingburg. When a train goes through town, traffic on the streets is held at a standstill until the train passes.

A new road will be constructed west of 14th Street, curving southwest connecting to Styline Drive, with the overpass going over the railroad tracks near 12th Street just east of the Industrial Park. The overpass will also have on its east side a walking path that will be part of the city's Heritage Trail walking trail.

A signal with an antenna will be installed north of 14th Street warning motorist of a train on the tracks. Drivers seeing the signal will be able to travel onto 12th Street and take the overpass across US 231.

Indiana Department of Transportation is covering 80 percent of the project's cost at $5.9 million cost. Dubos County will cover 10 percent up to $1 million with the City of Huntingburg covering the other 10 percent.

Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
