Judge Blocks Use Of Easements Near Lake Monroe For Logging

Last updated on Friday, May 11, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Monroe County Circuit Court Judge has bloced use of 3 easements near Lake Monroe for logging.

Senior Judge David Holt has ordered property owner Joe Huff to stop using three easements in the Shore subdivision to access his property to remove timber from the 230 acres that he owns. The land borders Lake Monroe.

Huff says he is logging the property to improve the overall health of the woods, remove fallen and diseased trees and he is selling others.

Tri-State Timber, who is removing the timber on Huff's behalf, has until 5 p.m. on Thursday to remove all vehicles and equipment from the property, according to the court order.

A final hearing for a permanent injunction has not been scheduled.

The logging activity near Lake Monroe raised concerns by county officials and property owners who say his logging is occurring too close to Lake Monroe - Bloomington's only water supply source.

Officials are concerned about the potential effect on the county's water source and the privately properties of residents of South Shady Side Drive.

According to court records, Monroe County requires contractors to have a permit before starting to log. But Tri-State Timber started logging without that permit.
