(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Black History Month Planning Committee, the Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs, and the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development are pleased to announce the inaugural Bloomington Black & Brown Arts Festival (BBBAF), Saturday, May 19 at the Banneker Community Center (930 W. 7th St.) from Noon until 4 p.m.
The BBBAF is the city's newest multidisciplinary arts initiative exclusively featuring artforms derived from African, African-American, and Latino/Hispanic cultures. This festival strives to affirm the Black and Latino/Hispanic cultural legacies represented, and demonstrate the power of art and culture to bring communities together.
Cutting a wide swath through the visual and performing arts, the festival's headliners include 2D and 3D artist Morgan Anderson, body artist Contrille Booker, spoken word artist A. Bowden, musical performance artist Luna DeCastro, painters Alexis Burr (acrylic) and Chas Culp (oil), textual painter Larissa Danielle, poetry, fiction, and essay writers from Monster House Press, storyteller Maurisa Li-A-Ping, graphic t-shirt designer Oscar Rangel, jewelry designer Arturo Rodriguez, ceramic artist Malcolm Mobutu Smith, sketch artist CJotas (Veronica Rangel), digital painter Phillisha Wathen, and more.
"People around the state, the country, and even the world know Bloomington as an artistic mecca," stated Mayor John Hamilton. "This festival will give us a chance to showcase the diversity of cultural traditions in our city, and the role that our communities of color play in our identity."
