IHS Traveling Exhibit Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives On Prohibition Makes Stop In West Baden Springs

Last updated on Tuesday, May 8, 2018

(WEST BADEN SPRINGS) - The French Lick West Baden Museum, in partnership with Visit French Lick West Baden and French Lick Winery, invites guests to enjoy Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives on Prohibition, one of the Indiana Historical Society’s (IHS’s) traveling exhibits. The exhibit will be on display, May 14 to June 14, at the Visitor Center, located at 8102 W. State Rd. 56, directly in front of the West Baden Springs Hotel.

Hoosiers & Their Hooch spans the dawn of the temperance movement of the 1900s, the roaring 1920s and the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment during the Great Depression. The sights, sounds and experiences of the time period are brought to life by images and graphics from IHS's collections.

In addition, the era's conflicting cultures are demonstrated through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana.

The exhibit also gives visitors an update on what has happened between 1933 and the present day, demonstrating the effects prohibition has had on Indiana's regulatory landscape and how it is represented in modern culture.

Hoosiers & Their Hooch will be free and open to the public during the Visitor Center's regular operating hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Visitor Center is closed on Sunday.
