Abby Laux of Celestine is the featured artist for this time period. She is the art teacher at Springs Valley Schools in French Lick as well as a professional studio artist.

After graduating from Indiana University, she has been teaching art in public education since 2006 as well as adult art workshops and private art lessons.

After receiving her Masters of Art in Art in 2012 from Northwestern State University, Abby began to focus more on her studio practice and has had multiple solo and group exhibitions including ones at Hoosier Salon Gallery in Carmel, Northwestern State University, Oakland City University, Marian University, St. Meinrad Archabbey, and Jasper Community Arts, Krempp Gallery.

Her paintings have been accepted into multiple juried shows including the Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition, Indiana Artists Show, Indiana Heritage Arts Annual Exhibition, and NOAPS Spring Online Juried Exhibit (Merit Award) and are in numerous private collections throughout the country.

Abby's painting Solitary and preliminary sketches are included in the text Evidence-Based Nursing: The Research-Practice Connection by Sarah Jo Brown. In 2014, Abby received the Eli Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant and traveled to Ireland, England, France, and Switzerland to visit the art museums as well as photograph and sketch the landscapes.

Abby's art explores a human connection to nature. She feels there is a great need to reinvent a way to coexist with nature in our modern world and mend society's alienation from nature. Abby also has an interest in the surface design of the painting, a concern for the gestures and texture of the paint. Striving to find a balance between depicting the space in a landscape with creating a reaction to the sense of awe found in nature, her work is a blend of representation and expressionism.

"I find there is joy in discovering observed truth in expressive marks." Spending time immersed in nature informs her art, and Abby has traveled to many national parks as well as Europe to hike, sketch, and photograph the land. These experiences as well as painting in the landscapes around her rural Indiana home connect her to those places. The paintings are a record of her interactions and responses to these environments. "I want the viewer to respond to the space through my interpretation of it. My art is not meant to be an imitation of nature but a revealing of the forms and space as I interpret them."

The guild will also have a collection of their artwork as well as Abby in the gallery walk. All artwork at the Jasper City Mill DCAG Gallery Walk is original and for sale. The work consists of oil, watercolor, drawing, acrylic, photography, print and 3D wall pieces. If you are looking for something different and original for your home or just browsing for enjoyment, the Jasper City Mill provides a unique atmosphere to do so. The mill has also added a beautiful collection of Amish made hickory furniture to their existing products.

May is a perfect time to join us for the reception in the riverwalk area. The Dubois County Art Guild promotes the appreciation of art in the Dubois County communities. The guild meets the first Thursday, 6pm at the Jasper Arts Center.
