(BEDFORD) - Crews will begin paving county roadways the second week of June.
"Summertime got here fast," says Lawrence County Highway Superintendent David Holmes. "I will know more the next commissioners meeting and should have a schedule available."
Lawrence County highway crews are currently doing some crack sealing on county roads in addition to mowing.
Bridge work continues on Bridge 67 on Lawrenceport Road. The 96 foot bridge over Sugar Creek is being replaced with a 110 foot bridge at an estimated cost of half a million dollars. Holmes says crews will pour the deck before Memorial Day with the bridge being complete by mid-June.
Work on Bridge 78 on Pumphouse road should be completed in the next couple of weeks. Crews are currently working on the guard rails and approaches.
The state will begin bridge inspections of all county bridges beginning in June.
In other business:
Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham reported there were 180 inmates in the county jail, of those 40 are females 12 are level 6 offenders and one Department of Correction hold.
Sheriff Branham shared with the commissioners that the Courthouse Plaza security drill was a success. Another drill will be conducted in the Courthouse on May 30th at 8:30 a.m.
"The drill will take around 30 minutes," he added. "It will not interrupt any court proceedings."
Following that drill Sheriff Branham will complete a report with recommendations for the commissioners.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported that she met with county and state officials and area firefighters, emergency crews and police, to discuses the Fibertech fire.
"We discussed the good and the bad," Luchauer says. "I should have a finalized report by the end of the day."

Centerstone representatives Kelly Higgins and Jenny Embree provided the commissioners with Centerstone's annual report.
The facility served 1,499 consumers in Lawrence County in 2017. Of those 64 percent were under poverty income, 17 percent were over the poverty level and 19 percent of those, the income level was unknown.
Of the population served, adult mental health services were 41 percent, substance abuse services were 39 percent and child mental health services were 20 percent.
Issues treated included stress, anxiety, phobia, depression, ADHD, trauma, PTSD, marriage and family issues, substance abuse issues, anger management, grief and other life adjustment challenges, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other serious behavior health problems.

Larna Anderson addressed the commissioner with concerns about animal abuse laws. She will meet with Sheriff Branham on Wednesday to address her concerns.
Anderson wants to change laws to punish those that mistreat their pets. She is raising concerns because a neighbor keeps a German shepherd in a small kennel in the hot sun and never lets the dog out. Anderson says the dog cries all the time.
