Purdue Polytechnic Launches Cybersecurity Courses For NSWC Crane, Defense Industry, Public

Last updated on Friday, April 6, 2018

(ODON) - This summer, Purdue Polytechnic Institute will provide two cybersecurity courses at WestGate@Crane Technology Park as the first certification opportunities in the CareerMakers series as part of the Purdue@WestGate educational programming.

"The CareerMakers program offers courses around industry needs," said Doreen Gonzalez-Gaboyan, associate director in Purdue Polytechnic Institute's Workforce Engagement Department. "Protecting our national cybersecurity is a top priority for Crane Naval and its contractors, and bringing our West Lafayette academic programming to Purdue@WestGate will not only provide participants with the expertise they need and also provide the critical certification in cybersecurity required by these experts."

Through assessment interviews and focus groups, Naval Surface Warfare Centers' Crane Division, or NSWC Crane, articulated security as the largest training need with cybersecurity being a top priority within that category.

"Our cybersecurity degree program is growing in popularity, and we are pleased to be able to offer workshops and certifications such as these at key locations across Indiana," said Gary Bertoline, dean of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute. "This program is another component in our effort to create learning environments that are better aligned for the digital age."

The first course offered is Certified Ethical Hacking Course (CEH), which is approved by the EC Council. The six-day, on-site workshop at WestGate@Crane Technology Park in Odon, Indiana will run this August.

The second course offered is Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), also a six-day, on-site workshop at WestGate Academy. CISSP will address eight Common Body of Knowledge domains and prepare participants to lead information security programs. The course will run in August.

Registration for these courses begins on Monday (April 16), with 20 openings available in each workshop. Both courses are open to individuals from the public, the defense industry or NSWC Crane. For more information on these courses contact Doreen Gonzalez-Gaboyan at gaboyand@purdue.edu or by phone at 219-746-0304.

A certification in cybersecurity demonstrates elite knowledge within the cybersecurity industry and allows holders to advance careers as cybersecurity leaders. The CEH and CISSP courses meet the conditions of the Department of Defense's Directive 8570.1 and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's guidelines for the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education.

"Cybersecurity has become very important to the state and Purdue," said Geanie Umberger, Purdue Polytechnic Institute associate dean for engagement. "By partnering with companies we help them to identify and address their cybersecurity workforce education needs. The CareerMakers Office is just one of many ways that Purdue advances the Indiana workforce."
