Man Arrested After Refusing To Return Rented Car, Police Chase

Last updated on Tuesday, April 10, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Police arrested a Bloomington man after he refused to return a rental car and led officers on a vehicle and then foot pursuit Monday morning.

Police arrested 37-year-old Ardis Griffin III on charges of resisting law enforcement, aggressive driving, possession of cocaine, possession of a pipe and a warrant for failing to appear in court on charges of auto theft, reckless driving, resisting law enforcement and domestic battery. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail on a $30,500 bond.

A Bloomington Police officer attempted to pull over Griffin who was driving a silver Kia with no headlights at 3:04 a.m. at South Walnut Street and Winslow Road.

Griffin refused to stop and blew through stop signs during a 5-mile chase with speeds reaching 70 miles per hour, says Bloomington police Lt. John Kovach.

Three police cars joined the chase.

The Kia turned around in a Village Pantry parking lot and headed west on Winslow Road. Then north on South Walnut Street and north on South Rogers Street.

The car then turned west on West Second Street, passing another vehicle by crossing a double yellow line.

After heading north on South Basswood Drive, the car turned on to South Mueller Parkway where officers flattened its tires with stop sticks.

Despite its flattened tires, Griffin did not stop.

The pursuit continued west on West Third Street, turning into the TNW Automotive parking lot. The car then struck a log. Griffin jumped from the car and ran from the scene and was captured after a brief foot pursuit.

The pursuit lasted around six minutes.

Inside the car, police found a glass smoking pipe and a small bag of white powder which police believe to be cocaine.

Police discovered the Kia had been reported stolen Sunday after a woman reported Griffin had borrowed the car she had rented about three weeks ago.

The woman told police she had asked Griffin repeatedly to return the car but he refused.
