Indiana Native Joins IU Health Leadership Team In South Central Region

(BLOOMINGTON) - Dan Handel, MD, an experienced medical professional and Indiana native, has returned to his home state to serve as the Chief Medical Officer for the IU Health South Central Region. He officially started in the capacity on April 2.

Handel grew up in Indiana, then completed his medical training at Northwestern University in Illinois. He has served in several positions with Oregon Health and Science University, including the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Department of Emergency Medicine. Most recently he served as the Executive Medical Director and CMO at the Medical University of South Carolina.

His background includes Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification and earning advanced degrees in Public Health and Aeronautics as well as an MBA. He has conducted academic research in access to care, health policy and emergency department overcrowding. 

In addition to his administrative duties in the south central region, Handel plans to work in the Emergency Department.

Joining Handel in Bloomington are his wife Nicole Chao, MD, a practicing pediatrician, and his two children, Zachary and Logan. In his spare time Dan enjoys sailing and running.
