(BLOOMINGTON) - Officials with the Hoosier National Forest say they’d like to decommission about 22 miles of roadways that are already closed to the public and motorized vehicles.
The Bloomington Herald-Times reports that the public has an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes through May 9. The decommissioned stretches would include 13 roads and parts of 52 others. Hoosier National Forest public affairs officer Andrea Crain says many of the roads haven't functioned as roads for years but are listed on U.S. Forest Service maps. Many of the roads haven't been maintained in years and some have trees growing on them.
Crain says the project's aim is "getting things on paper as they are in real life." When the project is finished there would be about 130 miles of roads in the forest's Pleasant Run area.
