Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Kitchen of Home

Last updated on Friday, April 6, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Firefighters battled a house fire in the 3600 block of State Road 58 East Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters from Shawswick, Indian Creek, Oolitic and Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Departments were alerted to the blaze at 2:45 p.m. after the homeowner's brother noticed the fire and dialed 911.

"He was there to feed the cattle when he noticed the fire," says Shawswick VFD Chief Bob Brown. "No one was home when the fire started."

The fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen area of the older farm house owned by Noble Ball. There was smoke damage throughout the home.

"It started in the area of the stove, but the cause remains under investigation," Chief Brown added. "The kitchen had extensive damage and the fire traveled down the far wall, but was contained to the kitchen area."

Firefighters contained the blaze quickly. Chief Brown says the old Indiana timber in the home kept the fire from spreading.

"It takes a lot to burn those old timbers," Chief Brown says. "We had to vent the roof which is pretty standard."

Firefighters were on the scene until 4:52 p.m.
