(BLOOMINGTON) - In anticipation of preservation month in May, the City of Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission invites community members to engage with the city’s historic structures in two programs designed to raise awareness about them.
Those who live, work, or enjoy spending time in Bloomington may submit an original photograph of their favorite historic city building through Friday, April 27 to a contest. Submissions will be displayed for the month of May in the City Hall Atrium, where the public can vote for their favorite picture. At the end of May, votes will be tallied and winners announced. Entries may be submitted to Rachel Ellenson, Historic Preservation Program Manager, in the Housing and Neighborhood Development Department in City Hall, 401 N. Morton St., Suite 130 or by email at ellensor@bloomington.in.gov.
The month-long celebration of Bloomington's unique architectural heritage also features the launch of the photographic campaign, "This Place Matters!" Participants -- who may be individuals or organizations -- will identify historic properties with particular meaning to them and pose for an on-site portrait. The photos will be featured monthly on the Historic Preservation Commission webpage to highlight the city's historic landmarks -- from grand to humble -- along with the people who care for them. Applications for participation in the "This Place Matters" campaign and the photo contest are available on the Historic Preservation Commission website at bloomington.in.gov/boards/historic-preservation, where residents may also learn more about Commission meetings and events.
