Last updated on Monday, April 2, 2018

(BEDFORD) - The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County was one of 38 applicants to be awarded the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). The IDOE awarded a total of $8.4 million across the 38 applicants.

"The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant will help the Club expand in supporting Needmore Elementary but will also support all of the current youth that being served. The grant is $240,000 per year for 4 years," said Brigitte Gurden, Chief Professional Officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County.

Successful applications required at least 3 scores from external peer reviewers with direct experience in out-of-school programming. "This year's opportunity was incredibly competitive and we thank each applicant for their efforts," said the IDOE.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program is a federally-funded program that provides at-risk students a safe environment during non-school hours. This program may have one or multiple centers/sites which may be located in schools, community facilities, or faith-based facilities. All centers must provide a range of high-quality services to support regular school-day academics and development, including, but not limited to: tutoring and mentoring, academic enrichment (e.g. homework assistance, reading, math, science, and technology programs), service learning, character education, physical education and recreational activities, and dropout prevention. The 21st CCLC program must also engage adult family members in actively participating with students through educational and personal development opportunities.

Currently the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County serves over 2,500 kids a year. With this grant Needmore Elementary School would get an afterschool program hosted at Needmore Elementary similar to the Lincoln Elementary School Site. Needmore Students will benefit from the new site with homework help, tutoring and other programs.
