BNL Scholarship Foundation: From $800 To Over Several Hundred Thousand

Last updated on Monday, April 2, 2018

(BEDFORD) - “It started out that we had two scholarships from EB Crowe in the amount of $400, a total of $800. And now we have over 200 scholarships…” said Mary Nell Boyer, board member of the BNL Scholarship Foundation.

There will be over 150 scholarships awarded totaling over several hundred thousand dollars to BNL Seniors who have been admitted and plan to attend U.S. accredited colleges, universities, or technical schools.

"This is the most [scholarships awarded] that we have ever had," said Boyer.

Last year $361,000 was awarded the to the graduating class of 2017 and Boyer said this year, that total will "considerably larger than that."

According to Boyer the scholarships are awarded to students if they fit the criteria of each individual scholarship.

"Some scholarships might want [students] to attend a specific university, some might want them to have a certain GPA, some might want them to go into a certain field... and each scholarship specifies what criteria they want to have to receive that scholarship. Consequently that is why there are different amounts of scholarships that go to individuals."

According to the BNL Scholarship Foundation website all applications that are submitted on time and that are complete are evaluated to see if the student meets criteria set by donors and the Foundation scholarships. Students meeting the criteria will receive an interview. By the time of the interviews students must have been admitted to an accredited university or technical school to maintain scholarship eligibility. Following interviews, the committee, made up of of the BNL Scholarship Foundation Board, will make the final determination of scholarship recipients.

"There is probably not another city the size of Bedford that gives this amount in scholarships any place in the United States. The people of Bedford are very generous..." said Boyer.

There will be a 50th Anniversary celebration dinner where the public is invited to attend and learn more about the BNL Scholarship Foundation in July.

The public is encouraged to attend the BNL Scholarship Foundation Presentation of Awards on Thursday, April 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. at BNL PAC where over 150 scholarships will be awarded to BNL Seniors.
