Last updated on Sunday, April 22, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police arrested a man late Wednesday night after he allegedly threatened and robbed his ex-girlfriend at her apartment a few weeks ago.

Police report they found Michael Atkins inside the apartment in the 1300 block of West 12th Street.

A woman told police Atkins, forced his way into her apartment and stole a cellphone and a tablet the night of April 2. She claims Atkins grabbed her, punched her new boyfriend and pointed a revolver at them during the incident. He then left the apartment with another woman, who later told police she was helping him hide and the two had a plan to flee to Chicago.

Then on Wednesday night, police were informed Atkins had returned to the apartment.

Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams says Atkins cut a window screen, jumped out a window and ran from police as they arrived at the apartment at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. Police apprehended him after a short chase.

Adkins' ex-girlfriend told police she didn't call police when Atkins returned to her apartment because she was afraid of him, Kellams added.

Police arrested Atkins on a charge of resisting law enforcement; on a warrant charging him with burglary with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, criminal confinement, domestic battery, battery, pointing a firearm at a person and theft; and on a separate warrant on charges of escape and intentionally violating home detention. Atkins is being held at the Monroe County Jail without bond.
