(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission and the Monroe County Historic Preservation Board of Review are partnering to present two events celebrating 200 years of Bloomington architecture for Historic Preservation Month in May.
Henry Glassie, renowned folklorist and architectural historian, will give a lecture on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. As part of the Rosemary Miller Lecture Series, Glassie will give a one-hour presentation on the development of Bloomington's architectural heritage over the past 200 years, followed by a discussion. The program is free and open to the public, and will be presented in City Hall Council Chambers (401 N. Morton). The second event is a walking tour of Indiana University's campus with Jim Capshew, University Historian, Bloomington native, and author of Herman B Wells: The Promise of the American University. The one-hour tour on Saturday, May 19 begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Sample Gates (E. Kirkwood Ave. and S. Indiana Ave.) and will highlight the history and lore surrounding some of Indiana University's most distinctive buildings. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring an umbrella or extra jacket if necessary.
