Bedford Camp Invention Program Funded By Duke Energy

Last updated on Monday, April 23, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Camp InventionĀ®, a nationally recognized, non-profit summer enrichment camp program, today announced it has received a $5,000 grant from Duke Energy.

Because of the grant, underserved students from Lawrence, Greene, Jackson, Monroe and Orange counties will have the opportunity to attend the STEM program at North Lawrence Community School District's Lincoln elementary School in Bedford the week of June 4.

A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in Grades K-6 to find their "inner inventor" by learning the process of innovation. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning; builds resourcefulness and problem-solving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship -- in a fun and engaging environment.

"The National Inventors Hall of Fame is a world-class organization that pays it forward through our educational programs, competitions and events," said NIHF CEO Michael Oister. "Thanks to this grant from Duke Energy, under-represented students in Bedford will get the opportunity to attend our Camp Invention program this summer. Our mission is to provide more children-in-need the opportunity to experience our programs, and benefit from the problem-based learning and hands-on activities so we can boost their knowledge of STEM disciplines."

"The Duke Energy Foundation is pleased to partner with the National Inventors Hall of Fame and NLCS on Camp Invention," said Duke Energy Community Relations Manager Bruce Calloway. "This immersive, hands- on STEM learning experience engages elementary children in creative and inventive thinking utilizing problem-solving skills and collaboration."
