City And County To Help Pay For Officers In Schools

Last updated on Thursday, April 12, 2018

(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community Schools will receive help from city and county government leaders in paying to have police officers at some schools.

The plan calls for full-time officers at Bedford North Lawrence High School and its three middle schools.

In March, school corporation's attorney Greg Pittman and Superintendent Gary Conner met with Bedford Police Department Chief Dennis Parsley and Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham for "a serious discussion" about what could be done to promote school safety immediately and long term.

The discussion centered on which buildings would be the first to have a school resource officer on site. Officials decided on BNL High School, BNL Middle School, Oolitic Middle School/Dollens Elementary School and Shawswick Middle School/Shawswick Elementary School. The hope is to eventually place a full-time resource officer in every school within the school system.

NLCS agreed to pay for 50 percent of the four officer's salary by using Safe Haven funds and money that would be allocated in the school corporation's General Fund. The city and county will split the remaining amount needed.
