Operation Dogwood 50 Tree Planting Efforts Now Underway

Last updated on Thursday, March 22, 2018

(ORLEANS) - Operation Dogwood 50 tree planting efforts launched earlier this month in observance of the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Orleans Dogwood Festival is off to a great start according to Orleans Chamber Exec. Director Robert F. Henderson.

"The early response has been tremendous with nearly 20 trees ordered and already planted." We are well on our way to reaching and hopefully exceeding our overall goal." He said.

Chamber representatives are calling on Orleans citizens past and present, businesses, civic groups, churches, schools alike to assist them in planting 50 new Dogwoods this spring throughout the town to commemorate the occasion.

Trees are available for purchase through a special agreement with Gary Moore of Lawnmoore, LLC who has agreed to provide the trees at his cost. 6-7 foot trees in white, pink and red may be purchased for $145 each while supplies last.

Henderson noted that sadly a very large number of the town's original trademark trees dating back to the mid 1960s and planted by the original "Operation Dogwood." have died out and/or been removed over the years and presently in real need of replacement community wide.

"We would like to encourage everyone to consider purchasing and planting a white, pink or red dogwood tree during this special 50th observance of the blooming of the dogwood." Henderson said trees could also be placed in honor or memory of someone.

The trees are now available for pick up beginning from the Orleans Town Garage complex. Moore has also indicated that if the purchaser wishes to have him plant the tree there will be an additional charge of $30 for labor.

Special order forms will appear inside The Orleans Progress Examiner to be mailed along with payment to Operation Dogwood 50 c/o P.O. Box 9, Orleans, IN 47452-0009. Checks should be made payable to "Operation Dogwood 50." Entry forms may also be obtained from the Orleans Town offices during regular business hours.
