NLCS Could Have An Officer In Four Schools By Next School Year

Last updated on Monday, March 26, 2018

(BEDFORD) - A resource officer could be stationed at various North Lawrence Community Schools beginning the 2018-2019 school year.

But first the school corporation needs approval from the Lawrence County and Bedford City Councils and help funding the positions.

The Times Mail reports school corporation's attorney Greg Pittman and Superintendent Gary Conner met earlier in the month with Bedford Police Department Chief Dennis Parsley and Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham for "a serious discussion" about what could be done to promote school safety immediately and long term.

The discussion centered on which buildings would be the first to have a school resource officer on site. Officials decided on BNL High School, BNL Middle School, Oolitic Middle School/Dollens Elementary School and Shawswick Middle School/Shawswick Elementary School. The hope is to eventually place a full-time resource officer in every school within the school system.

NLCS would agree to pay for 50 percent of the four officer's salary by using Safe Haven funds and money that would be allocated in the school corporation's General Fund. The remainder salaries would come from Lawrence county and from the City of Bedford.

Sheriff Mike Branham is on the Lawrence County Council's agenda which will meet Tuesday to request funding.

Chief Dennis Parsley will present the recommendations at the Bedford City Council meeting on April 10.
